Cosplay is a practice consisting of embodying a fictional character, often from works of pop culture. This practice fits perfectly within the spirit of carnival, which celebrates festivities and the art of dressing up.
Although cosplays can be purchased, cosplayers often make them themselves, and approximately 15 handmade costumes by amateur or professional cosplayers will be exhibited at Cap3000. These high-quality costumes will showcase various universes such as video games, manga, Disney princesses, musicals, and TV series.

Costume : Aurora (Sleeping Beauty)
What girl has never dreamed of a magical dress that changes color like Princess Aurora? And yet, here it is, the uniqueness and complexity of this dress lie in its ability to change color with a twirl. Several months of work were necessary to test and find a functional and easy-to-handle system that doesn’t add too much thickness to maintain a total surprise. For this, it was necessary to sew two dresses of different colors, but in identical fabrics, and find a way to combine them together. To give a royal aspect to the dress, it is made of fine jacquard, duchess satin, and glazed satin. Guipure lace and beads embellish the ensemble. As for the jewelry, they were computer-modeled and 3D-printed.

Costume : Rapunzel (Tangled)
Creating Rapunzel’s dress took several months. It began with pattern-making (laying out the different parts of the garment on paper), which needed to be digitized to recreate it on a computer. This work was necessary to design the various patterns on vector software and place them on the pattern in order to embroider them by machine. One of the longest tasks was preparing the different embroideries through dedicated software and ensuring they fit together correctly by aligning 30x20cm rectangles. The next step was the longest and most delicate: positioning the different frames that allow embroidery with a tolerable margin of error of only 1mm! Once an area equivalent to 3m² was embroidered, the different fabric pieces had to be cut, while maximizing pattern alignment to achieve a consistent and visually fluid result. The wig was made by adding several extensions sewn in cascades onto a fabric strip. This technique allows for a wig length of 1m80 and more!

Costume : Elsa (Frozen 2)
Queen Elsa’s dress, from the movie “Frozen 2”. The purple gradient of the skirt was handcrafted using special dye for synthetic fabrics. The small crystal motifs are vectorized on a computer, then cut out and applied to the fabric using the heat of an iron. Rhinestones and beads are sewn one by one to decorate the top.

Cosplayer : Koe
Costume : Christine Daaé (The Phantom of the Opera)
Anecdotes and info: No, it’s not Empress Sissi’s dress, but the costume was indeed inspired by it! Made of 10 meters of silk taffeta and 5 petticoats to achieve a royal voluminous effect, it required muscles to carry all those layers. In numbers, this dress took 10 months of work, 10 meters of tulle, 8 meters of underskirts, hundreds of hand-painted fabric petals assembled by hand, and lace on tulle made by hand in the absence of finding the right pattern. Fun fact: We know you’re wondering: the weight of this marvel is nearly 7 kilograms! This costume had the honor of winning at an international cosplay competition!

This costume required a variety of different techniques, such as leatherwork, embroidery, crafting a perfectly fitted mask for the face, and creating a sword that can pass through doors during heightened security measures. The embroidery alone took 238 hours of handwork.
Fun fact: Making a custom-fitted mask requires a full face molding, which means enduring a long session of breathing through two straws inserted into the nose! This costume had the honor of winning at an international cosplay competition!

Costume : Clarke Griffin (The 100)
Anecdotes and info: A shoulder armor made of reclaimed metal plates? Too heavy, too dangerous to move with on stage, so improvisation was key. All metal-looking parts are made from a thermoplastic material called worbla. Between layers, small foam diamonds were added to achieve the effect of non-slip plates.
Fun fact: Did you know that for every 7 square centimeters of chainmail, it takes half a day of work and 96 rings?

Costume : Lexa (The 100)
When it comes to a post-apocalyptic costume, recycling is key, and we’ve tried to push the boundaries of resourcefulness to embody the spirit of repurposing. The belt of this costume is made from an old sofa leather, the weapons are crafted from abandoned bed slats, other chains and leathers come from old bags, and we even have a seat belt retrieved from a car in the junkyard. In total, only the fabrics for the coat and cape were purchased new.

Have you always dreamed of having beautiful purple skin? Me too, and now it’s a reality with this costume, thanks to makeup and a full-body fabric suit.
